Rin as a main character had so much potential after TPW and it was squandered in TDR only for it to be resuscitated last minute just in time for The Burning God. The readers who are already familiar with the historical events this book is inspired by, there’s not much new and you will already be able to predict how the course of TDR will go. TPW was at least polished, but TDR reads like a first draft with, in large part, little substance. As someone who liked The Poppy War (TPW), I was massively disappointed by TDR. I found The Dragon Republic (TDR) to be a drudgingly slow read. GOD THIS WAS A SLOG. Read partially through e-ARC and mostly through audiobook narrated by Emily Woo Zeller.
